Cartoon by Warner advertising "Odearerst" mattresses, from The Irish Times

Meredith J. Brosnan, an illustrator, cartoonist and caricaturist who worked under the pen-name Warner, was born in Tralee, County Kerry, on 17 August 1905, the son of Patrick Brosnan, an officer in the British army and riding instructor, and his wife Lucy. He was awarded a scholarship the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 1924, but left after the first year. He moved to Edinburgh and worked as an illustrator and cartoonist for The Scotsman from 1926 to 1938. When the Second World War broke out he returned to Dublin, and contributed to Dublin Opinion, the Irish Farmers' Journal, the Irish Tatler and Sketch, The Irish Times and the Sunday Independent. He created a weekly cartoon and limerick advertising Odearest mattresses which appeared in The Irish Times for about 25 years, commenting on contemporary Irish life. He made a series of etchings for the Red Bank Restaurant in Dublin, and he and his son David created a mural for the Goose Green pub in Fairview, County Dublin. He died in Dublin on 29 September 1974.
