Neal O'Carroll is the creator of the webcomic Matchstick Cats, which which started in 2004 and is still running on an occasional basis despite a four year break that ended in 2020.. The comic features two stick-figure cats, peeking up from behind the bottom of the phrame, engageing in comedic dialogue. To make it more accessible .
In 2024 O'Carroll revamped it to be more accessible to those with particular vision impairments such as Retinitis Pigmentosa. Among other things, this involved inverting the colours so that the background became a glare-free black instead of white. This enabled him to continue making Matchstick Cats despite his own progressive sight loss. O'Carroll also created and hosts long running Irish comedy podcast Into Your Head. Both the comic and the podcast are made using the same creative method: starting set sentences such as "Yeah so anyway, that's when I realised" or "Once upon a time there was a dog", with no idea how the sentence will end, never mind what the topic will be.
