Paul Mary Gray was born in Dublin on 17 May 1842. Educated at a convent, he taught drawing at the Tullabeg School, worked for the Dublin printseller Dillon, and exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1861-1863. He moved to London in 1863, selling cartoons to Punch, Fun, London Society, London Journal and other magazines. He achieved some degree of success, but died of tuberculosis in Brighton on 14 November 1866. He was buried at Kensal Green Roman Catholic Cemetery three days later.
